Claremore native Abigail Farnsworth was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). She is one of 225 outstanding NTHS members across the U.S. to receive a $1,000 Jon H. Poteat Scholarship.

“It was a nice surprise,” Farnsworth said of the scholarship. “It will help with the cost of college next semester.”

NTHS is a leader in recognizing student achievement in career and technical education. More than 4,350 schools and colleges are affiliated with NTHS, and since its founding in 1984, it has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships to CareerTech students nationwide.

The Jon H. Poteat Scholarship, named in honor and memory of the co-founder of NTHS, is awarded annually to members who consistently exemplify the seven character attributes of NTHS – Skill, Honesty, Service, Responsibility, Scholarship, Citizenship and Leadership.

“I’ve participated in several leadership programs while taking courses here at Tech, and I just returned from being a page in Oklahoma City with Representative Mark Lepak,” said Farnsworth.

NTHS works in partnership with national student leadership organizations to promote educational excellence and award scholarships to career and technical education students. These include Business Professionals of America (BPA), Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA/DEX), Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA/PBL), Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA), and SkillsUSA.

Farnsworth is enrolled in the Health Careers Program at Northeast Tech’s Pryor Campus, and she also participates in the HOSA student organization.

“After graduation, I’m going to college at RSU to major in nursing and then pediatrics. I’ve always liked working with little kids,” said Farnsworth. “Through my times at clinicals. I had the chance to work with little ones and I enjoyed it – that’s the direction I want to go with my health career.”
